Own your questions

This is the difference between an amateur and a pro: the amateur blindly accepts the answers he or she is given, whereas the pro takes the answers and evaluates them for accuracy and precision and completeness.

In other words, pros understand that the act of asking a question does not absolve them of the responsibility to find the answer they need. They still have full accountability for finding an answer to their question, for furthering their own discovery, even though they have asked others to supply an answer.

Here’s a clue you’re dealing with an amateur: when prompted for an explanation of a decision, especially if an error was involved, they reply, “But So-and-So told me…”

A pro will always take full responsibility, no matter who they asked.
