Well hello, hello everyone. Happy holidays from me at Aurelian Coaching. It’s so good to talk to you guys through this live. I want to share with you a common theme that has been threaded throughout all of my coaching engagements in 2019, and I want you all to benefit from it.

I want to save you guys some time because it doesn’t matter what people have come to me for, whether it’s trying to get into senior leadership, or trying to land a big bonus, or trying to make a career change, whatever it might be, there is one common theme that there’s been no exception to, which has come up with every single one of my clients when they come to me for career strategy. And that is, that at a fundamental level, the issue and the challenge that they have is really a mindset issue.

So it’s less about tactically what you need to do, and more about some limiting beliefs about your circumstances, or your own capability that is holding you back. And so, when people have come to me to achieve whatever they want to achieve, I often ask them two questions.

The first question I ask them is, well tell me why you haven’t achieved what you are seeking. And the answer can come in one of two different categories. The first category is: their circumstances. The industry is consolidating, or technology is replacing jobs, or there’s just not as much opportunity, or I have a toxic work environment, somebody else is trying to sabotage me. Sometimes people say, I have competing priorities at home, and that’s why I can’t get ahead in my career. So that’s one category of reason.

The other category of reason that people give me when I ask them, so why haven’t you achieved what you want to achieve, is they say it has something to do with themselves. Well I’m just not a good networker. Or I’m a really good individual contributor, but I don’t really like to work on teams. Or I’m just not really good at that, or I don’t really have a lot of experience in this other thing, whatever it might be.

One reason might be external, one reason might be internal, and I’m here to tell you it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter. Some people say, well of course you can’t blame your external circumstances, of course you have to fix yourself and adjust yourself, but I’m telling you, whether external or internal, it doesn’t matter.

There is some sort of limiting belief that’s holding you back from achieving your goal. I promise you that. That is always, always the case. And so, what I like to do is work with these mid-career achievers to surface what those issues are, and address those things at a fundamental level, so that you can finally get to business, and do the things that you need to do. And, you always already know what you need to do.

Which brings us to the second question I ask people. The second question I ask is, what do you think you need to do differently, or what do you think that you need to do that you haven’t been doing? And a lot of times, the responses are, “No no no, I’ve done everything, I’m tapped out. I’ve done everything that I can, that’s why I hired you.” and I say “OK. Let’s just play a little game. Let’s play a game where the tables are turned. And, if you were forced – forced! – to come up with something, that you had to do differently, something that you had to do that you haven’t really tried in the past, let’s just do some brainstorming. Tell me what those things would be.” There hasn’t been a single client who hasn’t put something on the table.

There is a difference between all the things that you come up with that you should do for your career, which you do, and all the things that you can come up with to do for your career that you don’t do.

And that difference makes all the difference.

You have to surface for yourself: why aren’t you doing those things? Is it a fear of failure, is it a fear of success? I’ve had that before. People worry, “What if I succeed at this thing?!” and then they make it mean like all these other things.

Whatever the career goal is, whatever the challenge is, I work with extremely smart, talented, ambitious, accomplished people. I work with smart folks, so this isn’t a situation where these people are starting out and they have no idea what they’re doing. I mean, at mid-career, you have 10, 15, 20 years of experience under your belt. And only now you’re hitting a wall? There’s something else going on.

This isn’t a matter of tweaking your resume and your LinkedIn profile. It just isn’t. You know what to do there. You know what to do.

So, this has been such a consistent theme in 2019, that I’ve decided I want to prioritize it in 2020. So I’m taking the full first quarter of 2020, and this is what I’m going to be focusing on. I want to get everybody who has career goals and career resolutions to, once and for all, meet them. Meet all of your goals this year. All of them.

And we’re not going to talk about mechanics. We’re not going to talk about how. We’re going to talk about why. Why you haven’t achieved them to this point? What are the underlying beliefs and assumptions that you have about your circumstances or yourself that are holding you back, let’s shine a light on those, address those, overcome those. That’s the type of fundamental work that needs to be done, and if you need help with the tactical stuff, that’s fine, but let’s address the tactical stuff later. Let’s do some foundational work first.

This is such a big priority for me that I want to line everybody up in the first quarter, so I’m giving a 20% discount as a holiday sale, so if you have been thinking that you really want to do something different with your career, you finally want to get over a hump, whatever that hump might be, and despite all your efforts, it hasn’t been going well, or it hasn’t been going well enough, then this might be the answer for you.
